Symptoms of Repetitive Stress Injuries
Nate Hansford
Repetitive stress injuries often result from overuse or doing the same
motions over and over again. If your job requires you to type all day,
lift heavy burdens, or do repetitive movements, you may be at high risk
for developing a repetitive stress injury. The most common repetitive
stress injuries are carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, and bursitis.
Carpal tunnel affects the wrist joint, and tendonitis and bursitis can
affect a variety of joints in the body. How do you know if you have a
repetitive stress injury?
There are several symptoms you can look for:
- Dull, aching pain
- Sharp pain when you make certain movements
- Stiffness if you rest in one position for too long
- Swelling or tenderness of a joint
- Redness and warmth in the affected area
If you start to notice any of these symptoms, it is important to inform
your employer right away and see a doctor. Treatment for repetitive stress
injuries often includes cold and hot packs, rest, stretching or physical
therapy, medication, and surgery for severe cases. Since these injuries
worsen over time, you should take action to protect yourself at your workplace.
In today’s market, there are several ergonomic machines and equipment
designed to increase the comfort and safety of workers. For example, if
you type all day at work, you may ask your employer for an ergonomic keyboard
to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. There are also ergonomic chairs to
prevent back strain, and machines to help workers lift heavy weights without
straining muscles and ligaments.
Should your employer fail to provide you with the necessary equipment,
and you suffer a repetitive stress injury, you have the right to pursue
compensation. Employers owe a duty of care to workers. This includes providing
a reasonably safe and comfortable work environment. If you discover that
you have a repetitive stress injury, you should tell your employer and
file a workers’ compensation claim immediately to seek financial relief.
